Graphic Onesies for Baby Barnes

We love our yudu machine! With the help of some 220 mesh screens and The Graphics Fairy we were delighted to lift the screen and find these adorable onesies peeking up at us.

We weren't sure if they would actually turn out right.

But we like the imperfections.

We made these especially for our friend's little bundle, scheduled to arrive in late July.

 Hope she likes them!

Amazing Crochet Reef

Crochet Reef At Smithsonian’s Natural History Museum Is a Masterpiece of Yarn

From the photos, it seems surreal that yarn could be made to look like aquatic creatures and coral reefs, and yet they really manage it. Beyond being beautiful to look at, the exhibit also has an environmental message. The exhibit is the work of at least 800 women and men, ranging from a three-year-old to a Centenarian, who hope that through their work they can attract attention to the degraded state of the World’s coral reefs. Twenty percent of the world’s coral reefs have been destroyed in the past few decades. Global warming, ocean acidification, overfishing and overpopulation are all threats that face coral reefs.

The organizers, Margaret and Christine Wertheim, are from Australia, where the project, which has since traveled around the world, started began.The sisters, an artist and a scientific journalist, wanted to highlight the blight of their beloved Great Barrier Reef. Beyond being beautiful and carrying an important message, the exhibit also shows the hyperbolic geometry of coral. In 1997, mathematician Daina Taimina recognized that the crochet stitch represents this complex geometry.

Wherever the exhibit travels to, the Wertheim sisters encourage the local community to create its own reef. These community efforts remove some of the bleakness of the message that the colorful coral reefs may not be around forever, and provide hope that by working together maybe we can avert disaster, and the coral reefs will outlast us after all, even if that three-year-old ends up being a centenarian.

Meet The Gang or in Preparation of the Handmade Ornament Swap

Our friends aren't really crafters. It works out well at the annual handmade ornament swap because they usually fight over our handmade ornaments. For 2008, we made a little obama clothespin doll and a sarah palin (i refuse to capitalize that) voodoo doll. They were a hit. 

Last year, we pulled out the big guns with little finger sized ornaments hand drawn in everyone's likeness. We printed them onto fabric and cut, sewed, stuffed, and bam! ornaments. They were also, a hit. Gosh, brag much?

This year, I'm not sure how we're going to top ourselves but we'll get into that later. For now, we'd like to go ahead and introduce you to our gang.

Welcome to the Handmade Wedding Part Two!

We spent so much time and energy on this event, we hope you enjoyed yourselves and were inspired. More than anything, we hope you came away with a sense of who we are. And although the entire event was about us, it wouldn't have been possible without the love and support of our family and friends.

the internet and modge podge-ing them

then my AMAZING florist stuck flowers in them

The southern dessert buffet was always a part of the wedding plans...

 The signs were designed in Illustrator and assembled WHILE I was packing for the hotel.

I diagrammed pretty much everything...

This small folding book with picture instructions on how to tie a tie took me the better part of a week to design. Then I scrapped it because I couldn't get it to print on both sides correctly. Crappy home printer...

A gift for The Efferson's, I cut the tree brances out of foam core board, the leaves and background were really pretty textured paper.  Each leaf has a name...one side is the Mayers, one side is the Efferon's

 

put them together and it makes a whole tree!

Let's talk briefly about the backdrop...which is another brainchild of mine

There are these really ugly stairs behind the curtain so I had to cover them somehow.

Isn't it much better than those ugly stairs?

Yes, it is.

Again, not handmade per se but Derek was playing the acoustic guitar on the porch as guests entered

so amazing to set the mood

Even my dress was handmade...well, hand altered. It began as my grandmother's dress in 1950-ish.

then became my mother's dress in 1979

I had the sleeves cut off and the top bodice and lace re-done.

My seamstress was fantastic
